Another reason I don't live in California. I can't call these feral cats 
since I get along quite well with them but I haven't specifically brought 
home a cat or kitten in 50 years. I put out food and water and they show 
up, or don't.  There is a program here where feral cats are neutered, 
given their shots, and released back where they came from. To prevent 
recycling the tip of their eat is cut off or notched. These have all been 
through the program though I didn't take them.

I live in a rural area and I think people take their pets out here, kick 
them out of the car, and wish them good luck. A few years back a Manx 
showed up. Manx cats have problems almost by definition and he was no 
exception. He seemed happy but would go on meowing jags so a neighbor took 
him to the vet, which I knew would be a one-way trip.

One very old arthritic cat showed up two years ago. When snow came she 
decided being mostly an indoor cat wasn't bad. Other than snoring she was 
no trouble but her string ran out last week. The rest of the herd may come 
in briefly to snoop around but have no desire to be indoors. Yes, outdoor 
cats have a shorter life expectancy, yadayada, but it's their choice. I 
don't want anyone telling me how to live and I don't force them to live 
like some people think they should.
