As best I can see from the web site, he took a Knoppix and
loaded it up with a bunch of hardcore math/stats software.

You COULD, maybe with less effort than trying to boot the
old Knoppix, kinda re-create the thing using a newer system.

Frankly though, even an old-ish Knoppix OUGHT to boot.
We've kinda discussed annoyances of modern systems with
secure boot (oft with security keys) and UEFI booting
which can complicate things. Keep tweakin'.

However your BEST solution may be to not "install" it
per-se at all. Copy the Knoppix ISO to yer drive and
then use VirtualBox to boot it up on demand. VBox is
quite versatile in this respect - and I've done the
same thing with a Slitaz ISO. The VM will get around
all the BIOS crap. It also has the advantage that you
can run your "disk" real-time on your existing desktop
   alongside whatever else.

Cold-chisel to the 8-oClock position will usually
do it quite nicely. But it's more fun to scavenge
the magnets and the shiny platters are good for
artistic applications or just as useful soft scrap
aluminum bits you can bend to shape.
