I had an extensive link about this issue somewhere. :-?
Tried to locate the article or thread, but I failed. I don't remember a 
good search term for it.

Basically, the BIOS added a small string to the password.

Yes, but (if it is the same and original machine) the password has to be 
known before reading anything from the disk, including the boot code in 
the EFI partition. Meaning, it has to be entered on some BIOS/UEFI 
prompt before Windows starts to load. It would also be entered before 
trying to boot Linux. However, I do not know how this plays out during 
installation of Linux or any other system. IMO, it should be transparent.
