As I am an openSUSE user, I don't understand the idea of having different "distributions" with just a different desktop. openSUSE has a bunch of them, and you can install any or all of them. Each user of the machine can use a different one. Ok, the install DVD usually comes with KDE and Gnome, while XFCE has to be downloaded. We had a brawl years ago so that the installer would not mark any desktop by default, the user had always to choose. That kept both the KDE and Gnome crowds happy.
