I wholeheartedly agree! And if the user prefers a workflow based around
saved window configurations, as f'rexample the KiCad community does, I
don't think it's the place of display-server developers to decide for
them that You Don't Need That.

Of course the Wayland devs are free to *make* that choice, as it's
their software, but they shouldn't be surprised when their behavior
tends to alienate people.

The fact that they knuckled under is a strong argument that it would've.
