Without a Windows license there isn't a way to update the maps in a Garmin. An alternative to a dedicated GPS is to use an Android phone. The screen on a Nexus S or a Thunderbolt is almost as big as a Garmin's, plus it's higher resolution. Google Maps is also a vastly better UI than the Garmins. What I don't know is if the GPS on a Android phone will work if you don't have network connectivity, if it doesn't that would be a huge disadvantage vs a dedicated GPS.
