I had to upgrade to Win 8 Pro due my other laptop with Win 7 Ultimate is falling apart. The lid on the old laptop will not stay upright, and the lid needs something to hold it up. My briefcase is holding the lid up. :) One of the requirements for this .NET contract I am working is that you had to bring your own laptop to work on this contract with MS, which I didn't find out until the first day of work. The only contract I have work where the contractor had to bring their own computer. Anyway, I had to do a hyper-v on Win 8 Pro to install Win 7 Ultimate. Win 7 is the requirement to work the contact from a remote location hook up with the client. Anyway, I like Win 8 Pro. This new laptop is not a touch screen, but it doesn't matter, because I can still go to the old desktop when needed. I don't see why business users will not migrate to Win 8 pro in a couple of years, like they are now migrating to Win 7 from XP or Vista.

It hasn't stopped anything in the migration to Win 7 that I have seen for a company's day2day business. And all the companies I have been contracting in are on Win 7 now, including this latest client, a state agency that came from XP directly to Win 7. Other than Office products, most applications for business are not using the workstation as a fat client. Fat-client means all aspects of the business program are running on the user's workstation. That doesn't happen anymore in business application development. Now, business application development is developed for thin-clients where as the bulk of the processing is done in the middle tier/business layer and data access layer/database tier in back-end processing. This makes the UI layer running at the client's workstation very thin with very little or nothing at all required on the client workstation, which makes workstation O/S(s) for the same platform interchangeable for the most part. Look at the Web application with a Web browser on the client machine and a Web server holding the programs for business rule logic and database logic as an example. Now it really doesn't matter what O/S is running on the user's workstation, right? Now, Windows desktop applications Windows applications themselves, Windows Presentation Foundation applications or Windows ASP Web based applications, even Sliverlight applications are using N-tier where the middle-tier/business-tier and the data access tier are sitting on their respective servers, and it doesn't matter what the user is using at the workstation for the O/S or what kind of application of Windows desktop, Windows Presentation Foundation, Sliverlight or ASP.NET UI is using the back-end. You can apply this to smartphone technology for a company that has workers in the field that are using a smartphone application, which is still just a thin client in this scenario too using the same backend. The UI technology is in different domains like Windows, Web browser, smartphone having the same business functionality, because business functionally and database functionality are not on the client machine, which makes the client's machine a dumb machine with a dumb UI, meaning no logic for business logic is sitting at the UI tier. This is what I am talking about. If done correctly, the UI at the user's workstation is interchangeable and the UI only needs to know how to communicate which as been predefined by the other tiers. Or UI is not interchangeable, but the UI is as dumb as possible that has no logic in it. This was what .NET is bringing to the table. Java is doing it too. Java has been doing it for a long time, and .NET has closed the gap in the last 12 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multitier_architecture Windows 8 is Win 7 without the tile stuff, and one can still go to the desktop that looks like all the other desktops before it if need be. I jump back and forth all of the time. The key is to know the Window-Keys to move around with Windows 8, which I am still leaning.

They are using small laptops that are sycned to their main server to keep all their data consistent. All I've seen have moved to Win7 for the present. The local nursing homes have moved to small laptops with touch screens and had to get their data synched up to the main server as well. I haven't seen any proof of it yet. What Oracle shows are 8 billion devices that use Java... that was what they had intended all along. I think it was orignally called Oak. > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multitier_architecture > > > Windows 8 is Win 7 without the tile stuff, and one can still go to the > desktop that looks like all the other desktops before it if need be. There is a sandalone install package for Windows Media Center for Windows 8, but no DVD player. It's got DVR. But you can also can also do this if one needs a DVD player. Luckily, Toshiba's download site has a DVD player for Win 8. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html
