Got it. To get the GUI update program to work you need to
use the command update program and update the GUI updater:

Really... not that hard for a techie, but for a general
user... that is just absurd.

But let us say I never found that... and never tried it on my own. Your
idea that some mysterious force was pulling and re-attaching the network
cable in precise coordination with the actions of the user is just absurd...
but even if someone was, say, watching over my shoulder and playing a trick
on me, Ubuntu would let me know:

That is right: it shows the network status and even alerts you when it
changes.
As noted: the herd is not very technical - only a very non-technical person
would come to the bizarre conclusion that a network cable was somehow being
pulled and re-attached, and the OS was failing to show this, as they ran
into such a problem.
