This being a discussion group, the expectation is that follow-up questions
would be asked if simply getting a direct answer wasn’t enough to get you on
the right track.  I have no idea what you already know (or not) or how you
learn, so it is generally better not to expect long answers (or ask questions
that require them).

It’s just the way most Unix programs operate, using STDIN if needed.  I’d
hardly call it “interactive”, but Programming Ruby did for some reason,
which lead to the confusion.  That site, although still useful, is quite
dated and may not be the best way for a newcomer to learn Ruby these days
(depending on your other programming background).

No apology is necessary; you caught and corrected your own behavior, which
is far more appreciated.  Consider filtering out the idiots in the future
rather than letting them be a continuing negative influence.
