Linux is not Windows ;-) Even if you had to, with /home on its own partition a reinstall would not have been an issue, you just have to choose the "Something Else" on partitioning and only format the "/" and set the "/home" partition mount point and NOT FORMAT it. A tip: If you use gparted or e2label and give partitions labels.
