After trying the following...

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install gnome-shell


http://tipsonubuntu.com/2014/06/06/change-display-manager-ubuntu-14-04/

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure lightdm

I am now able to login.  But,
not sure what happened to the "lightdm" display manager.
I am now using "gdm" display manager.
