Perhaps this would work for you:

if arglist:
    defaults = [self.parm1, self.parm2, self.parm3, self.parm4]
    arglist = arglist[1:] + defaults[len(arglist)-1:]
    self.parm1, self.parm2, self.parm3, self.parm4 = arglist[:4]
