Here's an argparse example:

$ cat argparse_list.py
import argparse
parser = argparse.ArgumentParser()
parser.add_argument("-m", "--modus", type=int, nargs="*")

print parser.parse_args().modus
$ python argparse_list.py 
None
$ python argparse_list.py -m
[]
$ python argparse_list.py -m 1
[1]
$ python argparse_list.py -m 1 2 3
[1, 2, 3]
