If you stay with this line, I recommend writing a recovery program that
can build a valid XML file from an arbitrarily truncated log, not just
the missing end.

The log is most useful when the run is really badly messed up, so you
need to be prepared to read it in the face of disasters. For example,
suppose the program runs out of memory and no more lines can be created
or written to the log file.
