I think the way we are headed is "open source" text books and CAI that can be used in the third world electronically without royalty. It probably more a matter of cataloging it and preparing it in a number of standard formats. Even when I went to university, textbooks were extremely expensive. They sold in small runs, and were frequently reissued. This applies to browsers, services, editors... It is inexcusable to punish the user by requiring some elaborate sequence to atone, e.g. open the task editor, find and kill some processes.
