Full screen exclusive mode doesn't seem to work on my Ubuntu laptop. I
checked the bug list and this is listed as being fixed. So, I have to
wonder why it isn't working on my system. I looked at the various
reasons why it wouldn't work, according to the request for enhancement,
and my system seems to meet all the requirements. It isn't dual headed.
It has the necessary dynamic link library.. so on.

Is there any reason why full screen exclusive mode wouldn't work on a
Linux box these days?

Thanks,

I've been using open source software for many years.. exclusively on my
own machines. Lately I've been considering getting a mac for my next
computer purchase. Hardware is a hassle and I just don't want to deal
with little hassles anymore. I'm sitting in a room now with a printer I
can't use because there are no drivers for it.

That said, I'm not going to move to a system that isn't based on Unix.
I'm just a lot more productive on a Unix like system.

Back to Java....

Sun lists this as fixed. So I wonder if this is a bug or if we are
missing some important point in getting this to work. Does anybody have
this working under Linux?

Thanks,

OK, first of all let me say that I'm a big Mac fan and amateur
evangelist. But it can be really, really frustrating being a Java
developer using a Mac. New Java versions appear with fairly long lag
times on the Mac. For instance, Java 6 was JUST released this past
week. (It was available as a developer build for a while longer.)

Apple also infuriatingly tends to be very silent about the state of Java
and their plans, so there was a great deal of uproar concerning the
release of Java 6. Also, there is usually a tendency to not release the
newest versions for older versions of the OS, so you do have to keep up
with the latest OS releases. But that can be an issue for any software
you want to distribute, since users who don't have the latest OS version
won't have the latest Java either.

This puzzles me greatly, since it seems, IMHO, that Apple stands to gain
much more from the cross-platform nature of Java than Microsoft, and
yet, Java is often a lot slower to appear on the Mac platform. I just
don't get it at all.

1.6 05

Maybe. I meet all the requirements in the above bug report.

So what you're saying is that I might be trading one set of hassles for
another? That's too bad. Macs really look nice these days. Maybe Apple
will fix this in the future. Is there someone I could send an email to
at Apple to let them know that this issue might lose them at least one
sale in the future?
