OK, first of all let me say that I'm a big Mac fan and amateur evangelist. But it can be really, really frustrating being a Java developer using a Mac. New Java versions appear with fairly long lag times on the Mac. For instance, Java 6 was JUST released this past week. (It was available as a developer build for a while longer.) Apple also infuriatingly tends to be very silent about the state of Java and their plans, so there was a great deal of uproar concerning the release of Java 6. Also, there is usually a tendency to not release the newest versions for older versions of the OS, so you do have to keep up with the latest OS releases. But that can be an issue for any software you want to distribute, since users who don't have the latest OS version won't have the latest Java either. This puzzles me greatly, since it seems, IMHO, that Apple stands to gain much more from the cross-platform nature of Java than Microsoft, and yet, Java is often a lot slower to appear on the Mac platform. I just don't get it at all. -- Thomas A.
