I think RMS mentioned in an interview that the bytecode compiler wasn't
in the earliest versions of Emacs Lisp.  It may have been (and probably
was) added before the first public Emacs releases.  I might ask him
about it sometime.  I do remember that the evaluator (not just the
bytecode interpreter) contains various efficiency hacks that complicate
the code somewhat, and this is based on some quite old versions (I
haven't looked at it in a long time).  I suspect the interpreter speed
had real influence on how much of Emacs could be written in Lisp, and
what had to be written in C.

Mocklisp wasn't even Lisp.  It was a relatively weak macro-like(?)
editing extension feature that happened to use parentheses as syntax.
RMS was pretty disgusted with it, IIRC.
