Thanks, I might have a look into it.

That would be in Algol 68 (modulo any unintended typing errors)

   PROC fib = (INT n) INT :
       IF n < 3 THEN
           1
       ELSE
           fib (n-1) + fib (n-2)
       FI

with the notable difference of arguments and result being typed.

(The 'let' keyword I find quite annoying. But okay, just a detail.)

Sure. There's not much options I suppose, and maybe this "M" or ML
was also influenced by Algol 68? Although Wikipedia doesn't mention
it as "influenced by", but given that it's from the 1970's chances
are there; it's hard to believe that the Algol 68 definition would
have stayed unnoticed given who was internationally involved.

Ah, so almost the same.

>with the notable difference of arguments and result being typed.

I suspect his is typed as well; just that the default type is
`int` so it's unnecessary to specify it.

I find SML a bit verbose. The original ML is closer to OCaml in
syntax, and OCaml is a more succinct.

Oh, I don't know about that; there are many!

Tracing influence at this level is always fraught. I would go
as far as to say that there was _some_ influence there, and ML
and Algol68 likely share some DNA. But that doesn't say all
that much. Perhaps that influence, such as it was, was not
conscious, or more than cursory, and after all, hamsters and
humans share DNA, too.

Yes. With additional possibilities in Algol 68, for example to use
a terse variant for the conditional, as in

     PROC fib = (INT n) INT :
         ( n < 3 | 1 | fib (n-1) + fib (n-2) )

(as you could replace the 'BEGIN...END' blocks by '(...)' syntax,
thus resembling somewhat the style of "C" braces).[*]

For larger non-trivial projects I prefer languages with strong
typing, and no "type defaults". (While for specific cases, like
in my Awk applications, I like its omission, and terseness.)

(I don't know OCaml.)

Algol 68 has means to reduce verbosity, as shown in an example
above. It's actually quite terse, even if compared to "C"; you
need no parenthesis around 'if', 'while', or 'for' expressions,
and the already mentioned expression syntax makes 'return' or
similar superfluous.

[*] And you can due to some (arguable) language peculiarity also
omit the spaces here - and I mean *all* the spaces! - as in

     PROCfib=(INTn)INT:IFn<3THEN1ELSEfib(n-1)+fib(n-2)FI

(only for the sadists and masochists or course). Or spread the
characters of identifiers like "fib" across lines which makes
little sense, or is, as said, only for pathological characters.
But that "flexibility" is not what constitutes the beauty of
that language, it's rather a (quite useless, I'd say) spin-off.

I allow some of the same:

   func fib(int n)int =
       (n < 3 | 1 | fib(n-1) + fib(n-2))
   end

Or there is compact form for the function header too (were the body is
a single unit rather than a sequence), designed for one-liners:

   fun fib(int n)int = (n < 3 | 1 | fib (n-1) + fib (n-2))

The scripting version is the same but 'int' can be omitted.

You can also choose your own case style:

    FUNC Fib(Int N)Int = ...

Actually you can do the same in C:

   i\
   n\
   t\
    \
   f\
   i\
   b\
   (\ ....

Ideal for narrow monitors.

Obviously only by an '\' escape hack.

In Algol 68 that's unnecessary; if you prefer write for example

    f
   i    b

But that's nothing a language design should brag about!

Careful here: when discussing types, languages (those that have
types, anyway) tend to be described along two dimensions: static
vs dynamic typing and strongly typed vs weakly typed.

Statically typed languages are those where the concrete type of
an object is determined at compile time. In contrast,
dynamically typed languages are those where the type is
determined at runtime.

Strongly typed languages are those where the type of an object
*must* be compatible with the defines defined for operations to
which that object is subjected (a loose paraphrasing of Liskov's
definition); e.g., to pass an argument a function, the argument
must be compatible with the type expected by the function for
that argument. On the other hand, for weakly-typed languages,
that's not necessarily the case.

Examples of statically typed languages include SML, Haskell,
Rust, etc. Those are also all strongly typed.

Examples of dynamically typed languages include Common Lisp,
Python, and Ruby; those are all also strongly typed (you cannot
add an integer to a list in Lisp, for example; that raises a
runtime error in the form of a "condition" [basically an
exception, except that you can restart the thing that threw
it]).

I've named some strongly-typed languages; weakly-typed languages
include C, awk, assembler.

Yes, C is a weakly-typed languages: there are rules for implicit
conversions, and you can add a character to a string and the
result is a pointer, which is kinda goofy when you thinkg about
it.

Is C statically typed? I think it is debatable; the presence of
void pointers and variadic arguments lets you make an argument
that it is not.

Rust is not generally considered to be strongly typed. Rust has
raw pointers and unsafe functions, both of which (can) violate
type safety.

That is orthogonal to whether or not it the language is strongly
typed.

Perhaps you meant memory safety? In which case it is worth
stating that the langauge only guarantees memory safety for the
safe subset.

Dereferencing a raw pointer, including for assignment through
that pointer, can only be done in an `unsafe` block. Unsafe
functions have no _a priori_ bearing on memory (let alone type)
safety; they only impose the requirement that they must be
called from from an `unsafe` block.

Using the `unsafe` language requires using an `unsafe` block,
even in a function marked `unsafe` (admitted, this did change
from earlier editions of the language).

There is something I would say here, but I am reminded that my

No, I think you should say it. The contrast was explicitly with
C, which is widely acknowledged to be weakly typed, and of
course C is relevant and on-topic.

Rust, by every definition I am aware of, is strongly typed. I
have never before heard the assertion that it is not. If you
are aware of some serious dissenting view, since you said that
"Rust is not generally considered to be strongly typed", then
you should provide a reference. The topicality is that it helps
to frame the discussion with respect to strong and weak typing
and how those intersect with C.

To me, it appears simply that Bart does not see a point in having a
"return" keyword in his language. I believe that is inspired by Algol -
I know very little about Algol, but I /do/ know Bart used it and took
inspiration from it.

I think any similarities to ML are purely coincidental. There are a lot
of languages where the return value of a function is the value of the
final expression. (Even in the C world, gcc expression statements work
that way.)

 From other posts, I gather Bart is not a fan of functional programming
languages - indeed, he has on occasion been quite enthusiastic in
telling people how terrible they are. He likes using a recursive "fib"
function as a benchmark or test function, but I do not think he would
normally choose a recursive style of coding.

Of course only Bart can give a definitive answer as to whether ML was an
inspiration here. But in light of what I have heard him say in the
past, it would surprise me.

This might be from my scripting language where are type annotations are
not used. The systems language needs:

   func fib(int n)int =

'return' exists but it is optional in expressions or statements which
are the last one in a value-returning function. I might use it if a
return value might otherwise look lonely or to make things clearer.

'return' is necessary for early returns.

I'm not a fann of 100% functional languages.

However we all use functional style at the expression level. My
scripting language goes a bit further and offers map, reduce, filter,
and non-capturing anonymous functions.

But all its expressions are eager and non-lazy. There is a mix of
mutable and non-mutable objects.

It is tempting to try and produce clever one-liners but I like my code
more conservative.

There is no connection to ML (the 1970s language).

'Expression-based' means that executable statements and expressions are
interchangable (declarations are not executable), and can be lvalues or
rvalues.

But statements such as loops and 'print' don't yield anything useful
(only a 'void' type).

In "C", 'printf' does return (possibly) useful information!
(Although in decades I've used it just once or twice.)

Whether a loop shall return a value or not is arguable, and
was at least a dispute in the context of Algol 68, IIRC.

So, do you know so little about Algol that you don't even know what
word 'Algol' normally means when it is used without qualification?

To inform you, it means Algol-60 or, more often, one of multiple
vendor-specific descendants of Algol-60, including Burroughs ALGOL
often mentioned here by Scott Lurndal.
It does not mean Algol-68 which is very different language.

In Algol-60 functions (they call them typed procedure) do not return
the value of their last statement. They returns the value that was last
assigned to the special variable that has the same name as procedure
itself.

I knew that Algol-68 is significantly different from earlier versions,
but not enough to what these differences are. And no, I did not know
that unqualified "Algol" typically means something akin to original
Algol rather than the latest Algol. (Either usage could make sense.) I
know Algol only by reputation and the influence it had on many
programming languages (especially imperative languages). But I've never
used it, or looked at it closely.

I think it is Algol-68 that was Bart's main influence, rather than
Algol-60. (He can correct me if that is wrong.)

Okay. That's the method used in Pascal and a number of other languages.

Algol-68 is not "latest Algol". It's more like side branch.
Vendor's Algol-60 variants and extensions continued to be developed in
the 70s and may be even in the 80s. Although I wonder how many of them
had complete implementation of "call by name".

Very similar method was used by FORTRAN II which appered in the same
year as Algol-58. I wonder if it is co-incidence or both languages
relied on the same prior art.

As was already mentioned, it's not another "version", it's a completely
other language, and not only in features (or so) but in its fundamental
different design. (The choice to use the abbreviation for "Algorithmic
Language", the name Algol, as part of its name component is unfortunate
as in the light that with the existence of Algol 60 it might obviously
lead to confusion.)

(Note that, as opposed to Algol 68, Simula [67] has Algol 60 as a true
language subset as language base, but has not only many more "features"
including OO-capabilities but a completely different memory model. -
BTW an example that in HLLs there's normally a huge difference between
the language level and the "metal" [or assembly, or internal memory
model] level.)

> but not enough to what these differences are.

It's something completely different; we could even say (language-wise)
unrelated. (Only the members of the working groups have an overlap.)

Including "C" (although hardly recognizable all in all), and the Unix
Shell.

It's worthwhile! - That is; if you have too much spare time. ;-)

fibonacci(0) is 0. There is no other.

Usually the fibonacci function is defined for negative numbers
through the same recurrence relation, so fib(n) is defined in
terms of fib(n+1) and fib(n+2). Here is (an exponential) fib
written in OCaml:

   let rec fib = function
     | 0            -> 0
     | 1            -> 1
     | k when k > 1 -> fib (k-2) + fib (k-1)
     | k            -> fib (k+2) - fib (k+1)

Incidentally, fibonacci(-n) = fibonacci(n), except with alternating
signs: ..., -8, 5, -3, 2, -1, 1, 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ...

Here is my current favorite (for C) linear fibonacci function:

    typedef unsigned long long ULL;

    ULL
    sfibonacci( unsigned n ){
      ULL a = 0, b = 1;
        while(  n > 1  )  a += b,  b += a,  n -= 2;
        return  !n ? a : b;
    }

Here is my current favorite fast fibonacci function (which happens
to be written in a functional and tail-recursive style):

   static      ULL  ff( ULL, ULL, unsigned, unsigned );
   static unsigned  lone( unsigned );

   ULL
   ffibonacci( unsigned n ){
      return  ff( 1, 0, lone( n ), n );
   }

   ULL
   ff( ULL a, ULL b, unsigned m, unsigned n ){
    ULL c = a+b;
      return
         m & n   ?  ff(          (a+c)*b, b*b+c*c,  m>>1, n )  :
         m       ?  ff( a*a+b*b, (a+c)*b,           m>>1, n )  :
         /*****/    b;
   }

   unsigned
   lone( unsigned n ){
      return  n |= n>>1,  n |= n>>2,  n |= n>>4,  n ^ n>>1;
   }

Much faster than the linear version.

You are correct, and I was incorrect stating that Fib(n) is
undefined for n<0.

I suppose I am in good company with my program, as Bob Harper's
version from his book on SML that I referenced earlier uses the
same basic definition:

```
(* for n>=0, fib’ n evaluates to (a, b), where
   a is the nth Fibonacci number, and
   b is the (n-1)st *)
fun fib' 0 = (1, 0)
  | fib' 1 = (1, 1)
  | fib' (n:int) =
    let
        val (a:int, b:int) = fib' (n-1)
    in
        (a+b, a)
    end
```

He only defined his version over the subset, Fib /\ N, and I was
basing my examples on Harper (which I hope I acknowledged).

Very nice.  64-bit `unsigned long long` overflows for n>93, so I
question how much it matters in practice, though; surely if
calling this frequently you simply cache it in some kind of
table?

I wondered how this compared to Binet's Formula, using floating
point:

```
unsigned long long
binet_fib(unsigned int n)
{
	const long double sqrt5 = sqrtl(5.);
	long double fn =
	    (powl(1. + sqrt5, n) - powl(1. - sqrt5, n)) /
		(powl(2., n) * sqrt5);
	return llroundl(fn);
}
```

Sadly, my quick test suggests accuracy suffers (presumably due
to floating point) for the larger representable values in the
sequence; specifically, n>90.  As a result I didn't bother
attempting to benchmark it.
