Well, I care about UB only to get correct results. Note that
"correct results" is about whole program, not a trivial piece like
that. So I need to avoid UB in pieces like this to get correct
result from the whole progream. If I do not care about correctness
the simplest solution is just not to run program at all. Or
replace it by an incorrect program which has no UB, for example,
delete line computing 'c' and replace 'printf line' by:

    printf("%d * %d is %d\n", a, b, 42);

If you care about correctness, then one can increase size of
'c', for example with 32-bit int one can have:

    long long c = (long long)a * (long long)b;
    printf("%d * %d is %ld\n", a, b, c);

If that is not enough (for example a and b are 64 bit) then
one can use library for arbitrary precision multiplication
like GMP. In fact, in real program for PC-s with such
functionality it would be my first choice.

In general, the question is what the data mean and what are
possible consequences. Real program my contain lines like
this:

    #define LARGE 1000000
    if ((a > LARGE) || (a < -LARGE)) {
        printf("a = %d has too large magnitude\n", a);
        exit(EXIT_FAILURE);
    }

and similar for b. Or something like this:

    long long tmp = (long long)a * (long long)b;
    if ((tmp > INT_MAX) || (tmp < INT_MIN)) {
        printf("a*b not representable in an integer\n");
        exit(EXIT_FAILURE);
    }
    c = tmp;

> What would typically happen if there was UB anyway?

I already wrote you that for trivial programs like above I expect
the similar things to what you expect. I wrote similar because
I do not exclude possibility for mathematically correct result.
As you have seen compiler may promote 32 bit calculations to
64 bits. 'printf' for 32 bit numbers may share code with handling
of 64-bit numbers. So it is possible that implementation passes
correct 64 bit result to 'printf' and 'printf' unaware of fact
that it was supposed to print 32 bit number prints 64 bit
result.

What matters for standard are much bigger programs, where it is
hard to predict possible damage. And where compiler have much
more possibilities to optimize and each possibility may have
complex consequences.

My point was about the UB. Regarding the correctness, maybe this is a
throwaway program that is not expected to deal with values of 2**31 and
above. Somebody could also type in garbage (I haven't shown 'readint').

The code for a*b will give a correct result when a*b fits into i32. What
catastrophic event happens, executing the same lines of code, when the
result needs 33 or more bits?

(In reality, nothing; just an erroneous result.)

Ugh, you don't want to be dealing with that everywhere. Even if only for
untrusted runtime inputs, if means dealing with failure. Users won't
appreciate losing hours of work via an abrupt exit!

So here you're using 64-bit arithmetic, but feeding it 32-bit values and
discarding the result if it's not 32 bits, even though it's already
calculated it. Might as well display it!

For a more foolproof program, then this one I did just now is fairly
robust, for inputs (integers or floats) up to 1000 digits:

--------------------------
#include <stdio.h>
#include "bignum.h"

char* readint(char* prompt) {
     static char buffer[1000];
     printf("%s ", prompt);
     fgets(buffer, sizeof(buffer), stdin);
     return buffer;
}

int main(void) {
     Bignum a, b, c;

     a = bn_makestr(readint("A:"));
     b = bn_makestr(readint("B:"));
     c = bn_init();

     bn_mul(c, a, b);

     bn_print(a);
     printf(" * ");
     bn_print(b);
     printf(" is ");
     bn_println(c);

}
---------------------------

With the above, erroneous input will most likely generate 'NaN' results.

However, for all I know, C also has UB in store for me within this
library (bignum.c).

Fortunately I also have bignum.m in my language, and can use that to
generated a DLL to be used from C. But why should that be necessary?

(I took his suggestion as simple illustrating example, not as
production code. Mind the word "like". The key component here
was the test of the data, and that something has to be done.)
Of course a professional system needs a lot of auxiliary means
to handle (and possibly fix, recover, redo, etc.) unexpected
cases. (Where "unexpected" is not exactly expressing the facts
since if you programmed that safety-means you actually expected
that it may happen and anticipated it.)

1. Check valid (specified) domain of external input values.
2. Make sure you used appropriate types for the specified values.

You shouldn't run into it by taking precautions in the first place.

Those precautions can be difficult.

Given that a * b have arbitrary values (say, from user input),
computing a * b while avoiding over is difficult. It's certainly
possible to check before performing the multiplication, but it's
not trivial. If I had to do it in a way that covers all the
possibilities, I'd search for an existing solution rather than
trusting myself to get it right.

(Languages that define the behavior of arithmetic overflow make
this much easier, either by yielding a result that can be checked
for consistency, or by explicitly flagging the overflow.)

This can be a problem in practice. In my experience, (a) most
programs don't bother to do that kind of checking, but (b) most
programs don't work with arbitrary input, and overflow tends to
be unlikely.

This is of course not an ideal situation.

C23 adds type-generic macros for checked integer arithmetic,
<stdckdint.h>, so you can replace
    c = a * b;
by
    bool err = ckd_mul(&c, a, b);
    if (err) {
        // there was an error
    }
    else {
        // c holds the mathematical product of a and b
    }

There are checked operations for addition, subtraction, and
multiplication, but not for division, shifts, etc.

	long long int x = (long long int) a * b;
	if (x > INT_MAX) x = INT_MAX;
	if (x < INT_MIN) x = INT_MIN;
	c = x;

That does, of course, assume that "int" is no more than 32 bits, but
that's true for every target except some early Cray machines and the
DS9000. And you probably know if your code is targeting one of those!

It's very common to see people ask questions like "I have two int's -
how to I make sure it is safe to multiply them?". I is extremely
uncommon to see it in real code. Real programs do not read in two
integer values like this - they read in real data. And real data has
realistic ranges that you can use for checking, and to see if the types
you have and the calculations you are doing will give the correct answers.

Sure, if you have an integer type twice as wide as your input
data, you can safely multiply them. I should have mentioned that.
But that doesn't help if you're already dealing with the widest
integer type available.

It's not even guaranteed that there's an integer type twice as wide
as int (though there is on most implementations).

Absolutely. But very often, you are dealing with data in "int", and you
have "long long int" available. Even though no single solution can
cover every situation, using double-sized types as intermediaries is
often a convenient and practical choice if you can't get realistic range
information.

True. You are in trouble if you are using a Cray 1, or a DS9000. More
realistically, if you insist on C90 (which some people do), then you
could have trouble on several platforms where "long" is not longer than
"int".

In theory, yes. In practice we typically see application domain
constraints. Just a personal observation from several application
domains I worked in.

That doesn't invalidate your principle caveat, don't get me wrong.

You should observe that not from a technical view about what's
technically possible - technically any 'int' may have any value
in the covered range! - but, as said above, look at it from the
application domain and its specifications semantically.

There can be cases where your domain is just "all values", but
here you can choose to use a wider integer-type beforehand. Mind
that the artificial (maybe academic) example of saying I want
"this type" and "all values" without resorting to a wider 'int'
type doesn't (as argument) lead anywhere. (Even literature on
numeric computation suggest eventually using wider data types,
if only for intermediary results.) In any way you have options.

One should also be aware that even in case that (for any reason)
any integer-range is insufficient you must address it sensibly.
And neither a wrap-around (with erroneous results), nor a signal
that aborts your process (you want a result!), will fix that for
you. The programmer's task is to fulfill the requirements, either
by choosing the right technical types or taking "organizational"
measures to handle such cases.

Exactly. And what do they do once they get notified an overflow?

Yes, I can mostly second that. In addition I saw the biggest gain
to prevent such situations by "semantic" input-data checking. The
same we employed for software configuration data.

Interesting.

But why not for division? - Is that defined only for integer types?

I'm not sure I agree.

If a language defines signed integer arithmetic as wrapping, sometimes
you can check the results for overflow after the operation - if you
remember to do so, and do so correctly. But often you cannot.

	int x = 553759450
	int y = 485977333
	int m = 3060408994
	int z = x * y;

With wrapping multiply and 32 bits, "z" will have the same value as "m"
here. How are you going to check "z" for consistency? It passes
obvious tests such as "(z > x) && (z > y)", and sign tests.  Testing
your multiplication by using a division is not going to work.

Even with just addition, you would need to clutter your code with
consistency checks after every single operation.

Checking for consistency at the end of all your calculations might be
possible in some cases - in general, it is going to be very difficult to
distinguish truly correct answers from results that happen to look okay
by luck.

If a language defines overflow as an exception, signal, or other type of
indication, then it's easier - and you can usually do your error
handling in one place rather than adding lots of checks. You pay the
price in optimisation - the compiler cannot re-arrange expressions or do
strength reduction (such as "(a - b) + b -> a") and the automatically
generated checking code will reduce efficiency. But you are right that
it is easier to write the code.

With UB for signed integer overflow, along with good tools, you have the
best of both worlds. Code is efficient and optimised when you use
correct values. And tools can add in checks when you ask for them -
giving you slower code, but helping catch bugs.

Division can only fail in two cases - when the divisor is 0, or when the
divisor is -1 and the dividend is INT_MIN (since the result of -INT_MIN
cannot be represented on two's complement systems). These can be
checked in "manual" code just as efficiently, while for the other
operations the ckd_XXX macros will typically have access to processor
flags or other features that normal C cannot access directly. But I
think it would have been neat to have ckd_div() too, just for completion.

Sure. That's why I asked whether the new functions are supported for
the integer type(s) only. (For floats there might be more cases, but
I haven't pondered about that, to be honest.)

Yes, they are for integers only. Floating point has its own way of
dealing with overflows - I am not familiar enough with them to give
details. (My floating point calculations never overflow, because they
deal with real-world values on their inputs and I don't use numerically
unstable calculations.)

Perhaps because integer division usually works and is easier to
check. It fails only if the right operand is 0, or if the left
operand is the minimum signed value and the right operand is -1.
(I would probably have defined ckd_div anyway.)

Yes, for consistency it would be nice, and its existence
wouldn't hurt. Now we'll probably see ongoing discussions
about its omission. (Or maybe not - I'm not sure whether
these functions will get widely used in practice at all.)

I've used the gcc builtins that were, I think, the inspiration for the
C23 checked arithmetic macros. But I have only needed them where bigger
types were really inefficient. (gcc on the 8-bit AVR supports 64-bit
arithmetic, but it is quite slow!)

<https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/Integer-Overflow-Builtins.html>

Since gcc (followed by clang) has had these builtins for many years, I
would expect that their popularity was the basis for considering it
worth the effort standardising them. I expect that moving to C23 and
its checked arithmetic functions will take a very long time to be
common, however.

are such that their product cannot fit in c. Once you've decided that,
it's just a matter of modifying the code so that the modified code's
well-defined behavior is to do what you want it to do.

gcc compiles that as though it were just "return x;".

Right-shift is not normally exactly the same as "divide by 2" when the
value is negative. (Right-shift of negative numbers is
implementation-defined, so a C compiler /could/ define it to match
division. But I think such implementations are unlikely.)

I recall from university days (Seegmüller) that we had conceptually
two distinct shift operations, one logical shift and one arithmetic
shift (besides some more alike binary operations, like bit-rotation).

A TMS DSP I worked with supported also an arithmetic shift variant,
in addition to the logical shifts.

Too bad that there's only one variant in "C" and that "implementation
defined".

These are also often referred to as "unsigned shift" and "signed shift".
  A right signed shift will replicate the sign bit as it shifts, while
an unsigned right shift will fill the new bits with zeros. For left
shifts, there is no difference in the resulting value (on realistic
processors), but there can be differences in the cpu flags that are set
(for processors that have them).

DSP's may also have saturating shifts.

C23 standardises a number of "bit and byte" operations, but surprisingly
(to me) not any kind of rotation operation. It also does not include
bit or byte swaps.

Yes, sure. But I consider the names we used to be clearer, thus more
appropriate. YMMV.

The function is the same, just the name of the operation was different.

I agree that the rotation could be useful (and also simple to provide).

The bit-swaps might be more tricky, I suppose, especially with longer
word-lengths. Also the support by the CPUs, I suppose.
(But I don't know what actual CPUs spend for this sort of functions.)
