6.8.5p6 doesn't apply in this case. It applies only to an iteration
statement whose controlling expression is not a constant expression.
Here's the full text:
An iteration statement whose controlling expression is not a constant
expression, that performs no input/output operations, does not access
volatile objects, and performs no synchronization or atomic operations
in its body, controlling expression, or (in the case of a for statement)
its expression-3, may be assumed by the implementation to terminate.
with two footnotes:
An omitted controlling expression is replaced by a nonzero constant,
which is a constant expression.
and
This is intended to allow compiler transformations such as removal
of empty loops even when termination cannot be proven.
If you write an explicit infinite loop using something like while (1) or
for (;;), it will be treated as an infinite loop.
In my opinion (I've mentioned this before), this paragraph is badly
worded. It says that such a loop "may be assumed" to terminate. It
should, IMHO, be expressed in terms of the permitted behavior of the
program.
