I've tried both of your above configure options, this time, I'll meet the
errors like this:

----------
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find crt1.o: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find crti.o: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [gnuplot] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/werner/gnuplot/src'
make[1]: *** [install-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/werner/gnuplot/src'
make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1
-----------

Regards
