A Portal displays related records from a Relationship, so as long as
there is valid data in the link field and, of course, some related
records with the same link data, the Portal will display them.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by "I want to add a reference to a
related record that already exists". If you want an existing record to
appear in the Portal, then that record needs to have the same data in
the link field as the 'parent' record - you can change the link field
data in either record, but the potential-related record would need to
be changed on it's own data entry field / layout, it can't be done via
the Portal since it's not yet related to the 'parent' record.
You can have multiple relationship link data in either field by
separating them with a return character.
e.g. If a 'parent' record link field contains the data:
Yellow
Brown
then it will be related to any records, via the Relationship,
with the data "Yellow" and records with the data "Brown" -
both will show up in the Portal (using the Relationship's
sorting order).
The option to allow / disallow the creation of related records via the
portal just allows you to click in a blank row at the bottom of the
portal and enter data for a new related record, but only for the fields
you have put inside the Portal and any calculation fields based on
those.
