Once again, it seems that I haven't clearly described my problem. I'll
try again.

I have a "main" table and two related tables. The relationships are
properly defined, I think. In particular, there are key fields in each
table that are used to define the relationships. I'm having trouble with
two portals that are supposed to exploit these relationships.

In both of these portals the key fields are clearly present when in
layout mode. However, when in browse mode, the portals appear to be just
white boxes. That is not because of my inability to put borders around
the fields (another problem for later discussion); when I click in the
portal, nothing at all happens.

I have created related tables and layouts with portals (with borders) in
FMP8. I'm just having trouble in FMP16. Hence my question about maybe
needing a new book. I'm tempted to create the database in FMP8 and
convert it to FMP16, but I'd rather figure out how to do it in FMP16
from the beginning.

As always, many thanks to those who responded and will respond (maybe)
to my posts.
