Another book of interest is

   P. J. Brown
   "Writing Interactive Compilers and Interpreters"
   (Wiley, 1981)

It's a completely non-mathematical (& pretty "basic", i.e., assuming
very little prior knowledge) tour through what's needed to write a
Basic interpreter.
