The VIC-20 started a lot of people out back then and that is why it is historically relevant. There were many different crappy computers back in the day, that is the interesting part.

It was essentially a game console. As I have said before it is about as relevant as a Morris Marina, a lot of people learned to drive on one but it should be consigned to the garbage bin of history. I had a machine that made both the VIC20 and the Commodore 64 look like pocket calculators. You've probably never heard of it - a Fujitsu Micro-8. It was a proper computer that would run either its own operating system or CP-M, I learned a lot on it hacking both the hardware and the software. Was it worth preserving for posterity though? No it was overtaken by more worthy things so I binned it years ago. I spend some of my time preserving old aircraft, but, at least, they provide pleasure for a whole lot of people enabling them to experience things that otherwise have no hope of doing.

You might want to check those ebay prices sometime. Wrong in theory, but a couple of months ago I went to a garage sale (no garage to buy, but someone did get the potting shed :) ). Glancing at the skip next to the house, I saw a datasette dripping from the downpour earlier in the morning. I set to and brought out two joysticks and a C64 power supply, but the C64 itself was nowhere to be found. The owners told of an earlier skip which, I had to concede, must have already taken the computer itself. -- __ __ #_ < |\| |< _#

I found a complete Amiga 2000 system with some nice upgrades in a bin a long, long time ago and when I was finished with it I sold off the upgrades and the box for quite a tidy sum. Some people just have no idea.

Hobbies don't need to make sense and in fact often don't make any economical sense. But they are enjoyable so it doesn't matter. Try one sometime.

Nah, some people are prepared, or now have more capacity to pay the amount requested to recreate/recover something from their past. There is also the "hacking" issue where early computer are far more hackable that modern crap.

But they still should be powered on regularly for maximum life. And it still uses other parts that don't last forever. I bet any rubber parts in the tape machine are turning back into oil by now for a start. Trevor.

There are two types of power supply, one with a 2 pin connector and another with a 7 pin DIN connector. If it's the latter it probably came with a brick of death and there is a real chance that powering up will kill the VIC-20. The good and bad news part about that is the 6561 PAL VIC chip is toast is that you might still be able to source one, but the bad news is that they are getting pricey. It's the chip that does video and audio and a common failure point. The 2 pin AC input VIC has it's regulator inside and some beefy caps that dry out, but in my experience the internal regulator and caps are pretty robust. As for the data cassette, probably best to take the back off and check the belt before you try to use it. You can't use any old cassette deck with the VIC either, so don't chuck it out - belts are easy to replace. I guess you were never rich enough to own a 1540 disk drive intended for use with the VIC-20?

Nothing for your data cassette, the printer is too heavy to make the postage worthwhile and as for the VIC-20 and the rest of the bits and pieces that depends on whether it's working, working properly, boxed or not and general condition. I would be looking to flip it, so wouldn't offer much. If you want the best price for a job lot put it on Gumtree or ebay would be my advice.

Well, it was a C64, effectively, so not a Vic20, yes. > There was nothing inherently dreadful about them at the time and there > certainly isn't today. Slow drives, but they were all like that. The colour screen was absolutely dreadful to use. It was simply too small at 5" and the resolution too poor. If it was monochrome at that size, it would have been readable. -- Xeno
