In my experience, the intial offerings via NBN were expensive. By the
time a few months(6?), we started to get more realistc plans.

Caveat FTTH/P. The other problem with FTTN is line quality is still the
same cruddy piece of copper and a few people get crap FTTN.

If that's what you're getting, you're a long way short of tier 3.

I'm on tier 3 and I'm getting;

10 ms Ping, 23.41 Mbps Download & 9.55 Mbps Upload.

I consistently get approximately that day or night, weekend or weekday.

I'm paying $110 with no calls timed, even to non-Optus mobiles, flat fee
to 1300 numbers and very very cheap overseas calls. The call rates on
the bundled phone are what we need here. We make a lot of interstate and
OS calls.

All I can say is Telstra is getting at you in a big way.

A few hundred feet instead of many kilometres and $20..00 less than my
existing broadband exchanging for what may be equal to tier 3

You mean you aren't on the NBN Tier 3 yet? The figures you quoted were
crappy old dialup speeds?

I'm on 300 GB but the both of us use only 100-150 GB average a month so
it's no big deal. My wife would probably use 2/3rds of my quota anyway.
I used to have 500 GB in Melbourne and I gave up trying to use all of it.

If you had read thread from beginning you may have worked that out, have
not yet been notified that FTTN is ready even though it is all there and
has been for month or so

Just jumped into the thread at that point. Not following it much.
Thought you had it already.

Anyway, Tier 3 is more than adequate unless you have a whole family
downloading/streaming movies or similar. Even Tier 2 would do most
people. I just wanted the better uplink for video conferencing. You need
fast downlink and fast uplink for that to work well.

It's the bundled internet/phone plan that's what I'm paying for.
Unbundled, I would pay a whole lot more.

Years ago I might have been concerned about the 300 GB limit but not
these days. As I said, I rarely get above 150 GB per month. Just had a
look at my usage, I see one month went over 300 GB with the rest between
70 and 150. Then I remembered Optus changed it's plans a couple of
months before Christmas and I'm now on the; $109 'yes' Fusion on NBN:
500GB Data + Unlimited standard local, national and calls to Australian
GSM mobiles. Speed is limited to 256kbps after monthly plan data is
exceeded. No Excess Data charges apply.

I pay an extra $5 per month to go up one Tier to 3.

The Worldsaver phone rates mean that we can call relatives and friends
overseas for less that what STD calls used to cost. Depending on the
country, 2 or 3 cents a minute. Not quite as cheap as phonecards but a
damn sight easier to call.

What that actually means is that the NBN contracts for the rollout has
been let out and construction is to soon to start.

I got this meaning confirmed by the NBNco a week ago .

To find out about when the NBN will be ready in your area , only take
the advice from the NBNco and take no notice of the connection dates
from ISPs as it is pure marketing hype.

The best thing to do is to register with the NBNco and when the time
comes , they will send an email to you about your connection type and
when it will be available in your area.

Nope, when its 3 days from the availability date, it
means that the work has started month ago and will
likely be available within a month or so of that date.

You must have asked the wrong question.

Utterly mangled all over again. Half this town went live on 23-Dec
and the other half went live on 20-Jan. It took a full week for NBNco
to say the second half had gone live after the RSPs knew that.

Pity that that was a week late with the second half of this town.

My neighbour who signed up on roughly 4-Jan when this area went live on
23-Dec
got connected yesterday. They had previously told him that he would be cut
over
the previous Monday but the NBN tech said he was too busy that day.

Another excellent result, 97/36, he's about 100 meters of cable further
away from the node and pillar than I am. He used to get 5/1 with adsl.
I never checked if he was on adsl1 or adsl2+, academic at that speed.
