why the heck does youtube put those banner ads on videos? as if anyone's
going stop playing the video to read an ad. all it does is obscure the
view of the video! and then you have to take to trouble to clik the ads
X to get rid of it!

I think you can turn them off in Youtube setting (need to log on)?
I don't see them (using Opera browser, Win10 64bit)

I don't see them either, using Firefox, but it's entirely possible
that's because I run AdBlock Plus. It gets rid of all sorts of
annoying ads. Felix, you may want to give it a try.

Great! Another convert to adblocking. You'll find that some sites
whine about it, with notices about how they see that you have an
adblocker, that they depend on ads, and they promise that *their* ads
are not a problem. Generally, you can just close that notice and keep
going. Some sites won't work if you have an adblocker, so then you
have to decide whether to disable it for that site, or skip the site.

I just skip the site. I've yet to find a site that was utterly
indispensable.

thanks. I'll keep it enabled and just disable it per site as necessary.
with some sites, like computer help sites, I'd be happy for them to get
some ad revenue from my visit

duh! yeah well that's obvious stupid, but it's a stupid and ineffective
way of doing it because no one wants the video they're watching
overwritten with an add. put the banner underneath the video then they
would get a better result

I have a pretty good idea that most ppl would simply want to watch the video

Clearly some must watch the ad or they wouldn’t keep paying for that to be
run.

So you'll never change from being stupid yourself, obviously.

Clearly it's *irrelevant* if most people don't like the ads, they'll
still use youtube regardless, just like most people watch TV channels
with advertising, even though they don't like the ads. "Duh" indeed.

and you'll never change from finding any excuse to take potshots at me,
obviously

it's not at all irrelevant because the ads will be ignored by most users
by far as they simply want to watch the video, which kinda defeats their
purpose

> just like most people watch TV channels

and what do they do in the ad breaks? turn the sound down or off, chat,
check their phone, or go and make a cuppa, or else record the show and
FF the ads
