#55223 — Telstra email

Fromfelix <me@nothere.invalid>
Date2016-09-12 11:22 +1000
SubjectTelstra email
Message-ID<e3mebbFe147U1@mid.individual.net>
Received this today. I knew something was afoot as I don't get spam
anymore.

---------------------------------

The new Telstra MailTM service is coming soon

We've recently launched a new email service called Telstra Mail, which
will replace all current Telstra and BigPond email services.

We've introduced the new service to meet the growing needs of our
customers who have told us they want to keep their Telstra or BigPond
email address but they'd like improved features and better compatibility
with all of their devices. We hope you enjoy the new features, including:

Increased mailbox storage to 10GB for email and attachments
Simple and easy to use across mobiles, tablets and computers
     Improved features and spam filtering
No advertising banners to distract you

What happens next?

We'll email you in a few weeks with the exact move date of your email
service listed below, as well as steps you'll need to follow.

In the meantime, it's important you follow the below steps before your
move to Telstra Mail:

Ensure you're using the latest version of your internet browser so
that your move to Telstra Mail is as seamless as possible.

If you have multiple email accounts, we'll send an email just like this
one to each account as they may be moved on different dates.

Just a bad idea to get locked into a ISP's email
patricianly when they show they stink at everything!

Trying to get a bill that shows me the bill for what I signed up for
is impossible!

I signed up for a $99 deal for a 1000gb date free national calls by
land line a mobile (excludes 13 numbers which are 40 cents)
Also they provide me with Telstra TV which if I sign up for Netflix
etc have a extra monthly charge
The HDMI gazzo arrived after 3 months of trying to get a correct bill
always to Telstra advantage not mine?
Not by much but around $10 which after 3 hours they credit
Got the last which is $4 over but give up still not a bill that I paid
for!
Got a gobbledygook "video" explaining bullshit equals bullshit not
even giving a indication that even Telstra understand their own bills?

Then they try to imply Telstra can be trusted by using "direct debit"

I don't know about "patricianly", but this is good advice. If you use
your ISP's email, it's a PITA to switch ISPs. I learned that when I
switched ISPs the first time, quite a few years ago. I wouldn't
recommend Gmail particularly (I have an account with them, another with
Hotmail, and one with Yahoo, mostly use Yahoo), but getting an email
with an independent provider is good for mobility. For that matter, I
found it annoying to have to keep switching my phone service when I
switched between cable and DSL, so now I have *that* from an
independent provider as well. Bundling services is good for the
provider, not so much for the consumer.

I would.

But yahoo is imploding now. And doesn't filter spam anywhere
near as well as gmail. Gmail does read your mail tho.

And just for keeping the same email address for many years.

Many don't bother with one anymore, just use their mobile.

Yandex is another similar option. If you prefer to have the
Russians spying on you instead of the yanks.

I won't go into all the pros and cons of the three email services I use,
but one big (to me) advantage of Yahoo is the ability to have a lot of
email addresses all tied to the same account. Whenever I have to give
a company an email addy, I create a new Yahoo "disposable" address for
them. If they give it out, and I get spammed, I cancel that one addy
without affecting anyone else who sends me mail.

>> but getting an email with an independent provider is good for mobility.

Exactly. No matter what changes to ISP, my friends and family (and
some others) have the same address for me over the years.

That seems to be a growing trend. I may do it at some point.

Yeah, most I know don't even bother to have a phone
plugged into their landline if they have to have it for
adsl, just so they don't get any spam calls.

A mate of mine still does, but that is so he can ring
his 2 year old who is happy to answer the landline
but wont answer a mobile for some reason.

> I may do it at some point.

Yeah, I've considered it but can get a naked DSL service
here so rather academic. Now I'm about to change to the
NBN in weeks but all the majors that I have considered
have the phone service included and since I am on a
contract with dodo I will have to use theirs for another
year anyway.

Unless the saving is substantial, I likely will keep it for
a while. I still get some people calling it who wouldn't
know the mobile number and no easy way to tell them all.

I just turn the ringer down/off
Now you can call free from phone to national land lines and mobiles.
Included in your providers "NBN" package I believe DoDo ask $10 a
month more.

No they don't, that's the call pack that is only useful if you want to make
calls.

Yes, but if you don't plan to make any calls at all, you don't need that.

I do make calls, now I hate these 13 numbers as you get charged 40
cents each for them their normal number if "they" disclose it is free.

I do too, but I use the voip to do that and that
doesn't cost me anything like $10 a month.
Unusual to cost me more than $1 a month.

I use their non 13 number and pay just 10c to call those.

That is the advantage of running your own domain, you can just issue a
unique alias to every company, forum, list, etc and when the inevitable
spam arrives, dump and repeat.

FWIW, own domain, 20 email addys at ISP mail server and a few biggies,
like Yahoo(reason why forgotten).

I have my own domain so changing ISP's is not a problem, just a matter
of editing the forwarding address

So the address you give out is under your domain, and you don't
directly use the ISP's email address?

Why tie yourself to a particular provider? For about ten dollars a
year you can buy your own domain name that you can share with your
family giving everybody an email address for life. You can then
forward incoming mail to a real address which can be their ISP or an
email service like gMail. Mail forwarding is often included with the
domain registration - e.g. <https://www.domainmonster.com/>.
