> What about Amaysim?

Yep, I use amaysim Pay as You Go and hardly ever spend
more than $10/month for all of calls, SMSs and data and
use it a lot on the garage sales runs which we coordinate
using the mobile phones now.

No good for talking for hours, but that doesn't sound
like what you mean with the low usage comment unless
you mean only a couple of say 30 min calls a year.

No monthly fee at all, you just pay for the calls, SMSs
you make and the data you use.

Aldimobile's casual plan is pretty good value too and
uses the Telstra 3G system. Amaysim uses Optus.

Yep same, my monthly bill averages to $12/month. Very good value.

The only downside is that it's the Optus network which is marginal here
but they are looking to upgrade/expand the network so might not be a
problem much longer.

Aldimobile is not an option here as yet but looks to be good value as
you say.

Aldi pay as you go is available you just need a sim card and $15 for a
year
Telstra network (never believe "help is on the way" from a Telco)

It is actually, you haven't needed to go to an aldi store for quite a while
now.

Yeah, amaysim is generally a bit better, but the telstra network is better
for some.

Amaysim does 4G everywhere its available, aldi didn't do it anywhere.

Yeah, that is the only real situation in which
aldi is better, where you get no optus service.

What about the 360 day pre-paid expiry?

My Amaysim isn't pre-paid, it's pay as you go so there is no expiry.

Amaysim minimum is $10 for 90 days (no data) after 90 days you get
another 90 receive only. Data is a minimum of $10 a month
if you top up before 90 days and with $10 monthly data you are
credited with you remaining calls and monthly data
Amaysim offer 4G

Aldi $15 can last 360 days for calls but on 3G Data (not sure if ALDI
data is monthly)

Mine is post-paid so there is no credit to expire. After the billing
cycle the account is paid by automatic direct debit (if it's less then
$15 for the month it rolls over to the next month). My usage averages
$12/month.

You can have the same as-you-go plan either pre-paid or post-paid. IIRC
if you only receive calls on the post-paid plan after 90 days you get
charged $5/month as a service fee.

Do Aldi have a post-paid option?

But there are plenty of places where the is no 4G service
available yet. I haven't found anywhere its available in
my town yet, but haven't checked that too carefully yet.

I was wondering if that was some glitch in the way the
phone was displaying what mode it was using, but have
just spent a couple of days in Sydney and did get 4G
a bit of the time, particularly around central station.
Not in quite a bit of the rest of the CBD tho, even just
up on George St etc. Didn't check where it was available
too carefully tho, just zoomed out on to the end of the
Dulwich Hill light rail and back to try that to waste some
time and around the more central parts of the CBD and
out to the Power House Museum.

If its so patchy there, its not likely to be
that common much else for a while yet.

That is only relevant if you say want a sim you can leave
in the car and only use if say the car breaks for that sort
of emergency and never use it at all except for that. Not
a very common use of a sim.

> (no data)

That's not correct, the As You Go does have data available
for 7.5c/MB that you pay for as you use it and now with
the automatic conversion to 4G even if only 3G data is
available, its charged by the 1KB and so is much cheaper
to use than the 3G data was because it was charged in
1MB blocks. Tho superficially cheaper at 5c/MB, it was
in fact much more expensive to use because of the
much bigger block size it was charged in.

> after 90 days you get another 90 receive only.

> Data is a minimum of $10 a month

That's not right. There is no minimum per month.
You are free to never use any data ever, and free
to pay for what you use at 7.5c/MB or 5c/MB.

I didn't in fact bother to get a $10/1GB block to use
in Sydney even tho there wasn't a lot of free wifi
around to use. Didn't spend anything like $10 on
data in the couple of days I had to use mobile data
instead of wifi and used the data quite a bit.

> if you top up before 90 days and with $10 monthly data you
> are credited with you remaining calls and monthly data

Not clear what you are talking about there, presumably the
prepaid. I use Amaysim's As You Go which has no cost per
month, you just pay for the calls, SMSs and data you use.

> Amaysim offer 4G

But isn't that common yet. That will obviously change.
I do know that some of our towers were unavailable
for a while allegedly due to the change over to 4G,
but that was at least 6 months ago, not clear why we
haven't seen 4G available here on the phones yet.

That is one downside with Amaysim, while its using
Optus you can't just ring Optus and ask them what
is going on with the towers with that sort of thing.

> Aldi $15 can last 360 days for calls but on
> 3G Data (not sure if ALDI data is monthly)

Amaysim's isn't on the As You Go.

Amaysim's 10GB data pack lasts for a year, but
I don't use anything like that sort of data in a
year on my mobile. Not cheap at $100. But clearly
a lot cheaper than 7.5c/MB at 1c/MB if you do use
a lot of data on your mobile in a year as those with
nothing but a mobile for their net access would.
And clearly a lot cheaper at $100 a year than
you can get any DSL or NBN for.

I actually have an amaysim SIM for my internet, which I buy pre-paid.
I tried to look into their pay as you go option (which I think they
call PayG) and after lots of searching on their website the only
references I could find to it were in their terms and conditions. I
also could see no way in the options for my account to enable PayG,
I didn't actually want to but I don't see how I could be exempt.

I figured the PayG option must have been phased out, maybe left on
for existing customers like Speedy. After all, if it existed surely
there had to be an option in my account settings to enable it,
unless PayG customers had to get special SIM cards.

The as-you-go plan as they call it is listed at the bottom of their
mobile plans page or by clicking Mobile Plans on their front page.

Have you tried logging into your account and clicking "change my plan"
to see what your options are?

Nope, As You Go.

Presumably you actually are that incompetent.
https://www.amaysim.com.au/mobile-plans/amaysim-as-you-go?icid=homepage_nav:mobile-plans:pp:ayg
You get there from the mobile plans tab on the main page.
Tad radical I realise.

> I also could see no way in the options for my account to enable PayG,

You just switch to that in your account management.
My Plans and Data, Change Plan.
Again, bit radical I know.

> I didn't actually want to but I don't see how I could be exempt.

You aren't just too stupid.
Stupids like you can ring them from free and they will change it for you.

> I figured the PayG option must have been phased out,
> maybe left on for existing customers like Speedy.

Nope, still there, right on the main page.

> After all, if it existed surely there had to be an
> option in my account settings to enable it,

Its not enabled/disabled it’s a different plan.

> unless PayG customers had to get special SIM cards.

Nope. Mate of mine was on the Flexi and changed
to As You Go while out of the country for more than
a year. Flexi has a $20 per month cost, As You Go has
none. Switched back once he came back too.

Another one did that when out of the country for a couple
of months. And went back on it when he returned too.

I don’t use the Flexi myself because I don’t normally
spend anything like $20 a month even tho I use it
quite a bit during the garage sale run. I'll certainly
go over the $20 this month with the days in sydney
using lots of data, but not by much.

I've got an SMS modem attached to a Raspberry Pi, 15 bucks will probably
last all year on that.
