  You have a year after it's released to *get* it (the free upgrade).
AFAIK, you don't have to *install* the upgrade and you can make an ISO
of the (free) upgrade, so you don't even have to keep the bits on your
system.

It will need to be registered. I am sure this is the main point to
Microsoft of the offer as they are trying to get rid of the illegal copies.

  It is effectively already 'registered' when you request your copy of
the free upgrade. The copy you get is specific to your machine, i.e. X
systems, X requests, X downloads, X copies (in our case X is 2).

  But even if the copies aren't pre-registered, there's no indication
that you have to install-and-register before the year is up. Perhaps
Microsoft will announce such a requirement in the future, but AFAIK, it
hasn't done so yet.

  So, as usual, it's just wait and see.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Well we already have this interesting point that it appears that Microsoft
is backtracking on its promise to allow pirated copies of Windows to
upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

There is absolutely no point in MS doing that from MS's point of view.
