It is effectively already 'registered' when you request your copy of the free upgrade. The copy you get is specific to your machine, i.e. X systems, X requests, X downloads, X copies (in our case X is 2). But even if the copies aren't pre-registered, there's no indication that you have to install-and-register before the year is up. Perhaps Microsoft will announce such a requirement in the future, but AFAIK, it hasn't done so yet. So, as usual, it's just wait and see.
