For monitoring a few servers (or a hundred) Icinga/Nagios is fine. For 
what sounds like one, er, nah. I'd just write a cron script.

I do use Icinga here to monitor a large count of servers (over hundred) 
and currently taking the jump to manage the server config with Puppet, 
as it has become an annoying beast to do it sensibly by hand, and things 
unfortunately have dependencies that can break.

Picking up someone else's badly crafted Icinga configuration, and also 
describing that to non-technical people is a huge sticking point.

Junking that configuration, and starting wholy anew is sadly not an 
option - business interference is too much as a new config would have to 
be validated, would have bugs, miss service dependencies etc ...

And at the top of the model it should be all dashboards and low level 
details dumbed down for management. That again is the painful bit, and 
there are plenty of other solutions for that.

So, if ya get the opportunity to K.I.S.S, I'd take it!


FWIW Found someone talking positively on youtube about NEMS Linux.

It's a Nagios built distribution that runs on a single board computer.
