#19467 — Exiting from X leaves screen blank if x started with startx

FromWilliam Unruh <unruh@invalid.ca>
Date2018-08-25 13:15 +0000
SubjectExiting from X leaves screen blank if x started with startx
Message-ID<plrkp1$2cl$1@dont-email.me>
I am running mageia 6 with sddm and plasma as the desktop manager,
My wife and I both use the computer, and since I am usually first on,
she starts by going to a console screen (alt-ctl-F3 say) logging in and
running startx -- :1
That brings up X, a bit hesitantly (Ie, it seems to take longer than it
should) but it works. When she logs out of X either with alt-ctrl-Bksp
twice or via the logout option from the desktop, there is a completely
black screen left over (well it seems to have dark grey stripes which
can change barely visible). Ie, it does not return to the console as it
should. If I then do alt-ctrl-F2, alt-ctrl-F3 the console comes up
again. Ie it seems that the logout did not quite finish from X.

(Since I logged on from the sddm greeter, if I do alt-ctrl-Bksp twice,
the system brings up the greeter again.)

Any hints as to what might be wrong?

simple solution, set a desktop manage to start as default and set that
startx can only started by privileged user.

Some combinations of nVidia driver and nVidia graphics cards seems to
always had this issue and the combination may change with different
versions of the driver.

?? I want her to be able to log on with a desktop, even if I am already
logged on. Her loggin on is not the problem. Her system being left with
a blank screen when she logs off is the problem.

Intel onboard graphics. This all worked fine in Mga5.

Either she starts a new seat with "switch user" from your session or you
configure the desktop manager by default at least to start two seats.

With similar setup, if the SO wants to login I just fire up 'Switch User'
and use the greeter to do the login.
From then on just swap as required from one to other via Ctl+Alt+F1 or F2.

[This is when away from base wih shared laptop. Separate PC's at home.]

Never seen the blank screen problem.

Sorry, I must be blind. I have nothing in the application menu refering
to Power. Or Session. The items are
internet, office, graphics, Sound&video,tools, development,
games,education, sciences.

It's probably a function of either your greeter or your chosen panel.
On the LXDE panel it is on the logout icon. Clicking it gets a menu
with several options. Switch user is one. That said, I do use the
LXDM login manager, too. Other horses probably run different courses.

Naturally, it doesn't really switch users, but starts an new display
for the new user and Ctrl-Alt-Function-number(7-12 for Debian)> get one
back to the other user(s).

Sddm, and plasma. The logout screen simply logs out. No options.

From an unlocked plasma session, click on the start menu, select "Leave"
and from there "Switch User".

How it looks in sddm I'm not sure as I'm still using KDM and in the
process of converting my multi seat configuration to LightDM, but
nowadays even sddm has support for multi seated setup.

Sorry, no such option. There are 4 options, (logout, suspend, reboot,
poweroff), and no switch user.

Mageia 6, sddm-0.14.0,
or

Then you disabled something, as this been default for all distributions
I have run with KDE, in older versions it has been linked to the power
management service.

Just configure your ssdm to start two seats instead of just one, then
you can decide she gets the first one and you take the other one, but of
course then you won't have this to whine about ;)

You have a starting point on this page (see bottom):
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Multiseat

It's not a simple as it used to be with KDM, you need to play with udev
rules and logind (if you use the systemd).

LightDM do have better support for multi-seat than sddm.

Ah. Many consoles. I have only one screen and keyboard, multiple people
use it, just not at the same time.

Same as me, except no one uses the consoles.

Multi seat has noting to do with number of screens or keyboards. A less
permanent version of multi seat is the extra xsession started by "switch
user", so if multi seat not the option, then "switch user" ain't the
option either.
