Sudden change due to surgery fails safe and it is completely trivial to do another scan after that just like was done with the original scan when that individual was added to the system. And if the retina does change at a high rate, that fails safe and you can just fall back to something else like a PIN but only for that individual and have the much more secure verification of the individual for everyone else.
