But isn't this the crux of the whole "Ashley-Madison" thing? They charged 
for an actual deletion, which means there is stuff floating around after 
people left.  Nowadays people are likely to keep personal stuff in their 
own directory, which was likely less the case decades back, so shouldn't 
that be deleted?

When I changed ISPs in 2005, I just walked away.  Suddenly they were 
selling out to a larger non-profit (the change went into effect a few days 
before the AGM, so the membership didnt' vote on it), so I just grabbed 
what I wanted, put a redirect for mail in the right place (it being a Unix 
system), and left a message on my webpage that included a gmail account in 
case someone looked for me and wanted to contact me.  That lasted for 3 or 
4 months, the invoices were being forwarded to me with the other email, 
and then one day it was all gone.
