It simply displays the SMTP error message.

In the past, ISPs allowed unauthenticated relaying from their own 
address ranges (as they know which IP address is assigned to which 
customer).

SMTP authentication is a standard created in the 90s, so every current 
MTA and MUA supports it.

TLDR: Enable authentication for your outgoing SMTP server in the 
Thunderbird account settings and you can send from anywhere.
