No lawyer called me up to agree with you but I do agree with you.

Once a valued employee had an altercation at an office parking lot my
company rented in another state, and they *had* to fire him. Not because
the altercation had anything whatsoever to do with work (it was with his
wife). 

The altercation happenend on company (rented) property. Period.

He told me that HR said he could never be hired again, and since he had
friends in HR, they told him (he says) that the lawyers won't let them.

The reason is that if ever in the future, he has another altercation, they
knew (or should have known) he was prone to that behavior.

Back to the Note 7, I suspect the lawyers argued to kill it perhaps at
least partly for similar reasons.

If ever, in the future, another Note 7 burst into flames, they knew, or
should have known, that it could. 

Bingo for the lawyers. 

NOTE: I'm just hypothesizing so, take this as an unproven assumption.
