I use FTP to transfer photos from my Android phone to my Windows desktop.
On the phone, I use ES File Manager to create an FTP server. [This is 
deprecated and needs to be side-loaded, but I'm sure that there are 
alternatives]. On the PC, I use Ace-FTP as an FTP client. Again, there 
are free alternatives. This is all done over WiFi - no cables involved.
Once a connection is established, the PC displays dual Explorer-type 
windows, showing the phone's files in one and the PC's in the other and 
allowing files to be copied in either direction.
