One of McKinley's stated goals for invading the Philippines was to bring 
Christianity to the backward natives. It isn't clear if he didn't know the 
majority were Catholics or if he thought that's why the were backwards. 

The Moros were easier to shoot than convert. Well, maybe not that easy 
hence the development of the .45 ACP. The .38s just weren't getting the 
job done.

McKinley was a softer target. Czolgosz used a .32 though McKinley died of 
an infection. Gut shots aren't pretty.
