Using os.sep doesn't make it cross-platform. On Windows:
>>> os.path.split(r'C:\windows')
('C:\\', 'windows')
>>> os.path.split(r'C:/windows')
('C:/', 'windows')
>>> r'C:\windows'.split(os.sep)
['C:', 'windows']
>>> r'C:/windows'.split(os.sep)
['C:/windows']
