Depending on the newsreader, jumping from the current message to its
parent is likely to be inconvenient, and might not be possible.
Messages can arrive out of order (that might not be as much of an issue
as it used to be).

In the newsreader I use, for example, there's a simple command to jump
to the parent message, but getting back to the message I came from can
be awkward.

If you want to refer to something in a previous message, you should make
it convenient for your readers to see the context.  If you don't, a lot
of people just won't bother.
