That was James Kuyper, not me.
In any case, I didn't interpret what he wrote the way you did, though I
suppose I can see how you took it the way you did.
My own opinion is that a defect in the standard doesn't require us to
discard common sense. I wouldn't hesitate to rely on the behavior of
`obj.m = 42;`, and I don't think James would either.
