The Japanese took the styling from the Brit bikes but technically they 
diverged quickly. Many of the Brit bikes had 360 degree cranks and the 
Japs favored 180 degrees with various balancing schemes, with OHCs. By the 
time they worked their way up to the transverse mounted inline 4s the 
Brits were history as far as performance. 

In a turnaround when Bloor brought the Triumph back the first thing he did 
was hop a plane to Japan to learn how to build motorcycles.
