Dissertation?  The kids probably thought his Castilian Spanish was a 
little faggy. Like English there are many flavors. We had a woman from 
Columbia who would sit in on tele-meetings with a Puerto Rican client to 
give us a running commentary when they switched to Spanish. When their 
discussions got hot and heavy she couldn't follow that well. 

In high school the French teachers laid down Parisian French. Some of the 
kids spoke French at home but it was the Quebec version. The two strains 
went their separate ways when France lost their North American colonies. 

German was similar. I only knew a few phrases from my grandmother strained 
through my father, However she was from Baden-Wurttemberg. It is one of 
the most prosperous areas today and has a lot of high-tech industries.
