It's not the new USA.  O'Connor's 'The Last Hurrah' was written in '56 
and made into a movie with Spencer Tracy in '58. Skeffington, the 
seasoned, old school politician loses a mayoral race to a new comer with 
no experience who leverages TV and the media.

It's been a while since I've seen the movie, but iirc for one TV spot 
McCluskey is shown with his family. The TV crew has to rent a 
sufficiently photogenic dog because any all-American family has to have 
a dog.

I don't know if O'Connor had a cocker spaniel named Checkers in mind for 
the dog.

received to finance his campaign. Contrast that with the millions spent 
even on down ticket races.
