Yup.  But it acted as a filter to keep out the abrasive morons.

Marketing was only part.  Compu$serve was still there - but priced out of reach
of most people.

Then you had things like Bix, (my memory is failing, but there were a few more)
that offered text-based mainframe-like interfaces. But it wasn't a
point-and-drool interface.  So it still acted like a gate.

Yes, but by that time that idea came to be, it was too late.  The number of
users had reached a critical mass and the companies that offered stuff to them
didn't want to reduce the number of eyeballs they got.
