Aging.

Purple Rain, 1984, reminds me of the time in my life, 
age 24, when I was "socially acceptable" ( married with kids ).

Originally, it was a sorrowful country/gospel song by Prince,
lamenting the failures of his aging father.

Prince asked Stevie Nicks to provide the lyrics;
she tried but couldn't do it.

Lisa Coleman, age 24, created the string arrangement
that transformed it into a (hopeful) pop song.

Together, they added the (ambiguous) lyrics.

To Prince, it's about his dad's failures,
symbolized as red blood falling on a sunny blue day.

To Lisa, it's about the vigorous red dawn of a (cleansing) storm.

Like Prince himself, it blends the sacred & profane,
male & female, without diminishing either one.

But, when it comes to lyrics/poems,
no one beats the geriatric Leonard Cohen;
e.g. "A thousand Kisses Deep" (2001):
