To me that is a completely reasonable desire: if giving a speech to a group
of mostly English speakers you should have someone who can be readily
understood by the vast majority of English speakers (in the locality of the
speech, etc.)

use reason to show the message to be wrong so they try to feel somehow
superior by attacking the messenger.
