Just checked my program... the values I used in the video I pointed you to:

    set theBright to (theRed * 0.3 + theGreen + 0.59 + theBlue * 0.11)

Rounded to the closest hundredths but same value. Played around and have at
least the version I ended up with set so if "theBright" was less than 200
then the normal text color was white (otherwise it was black).

I did not set bold or anything else...
